Youth Acres 65th Anniversary 1944-2009
In the early 1940's, construction of Lake Canton has just been completed to provide the City of Canton with water. It was built by the Work Progress Administration, or WPA, which was formed after the Great Depression to create jobs and public works projects such as Lake Canton.

The formation of Lake Canton and the surrounding area also created a general recreational area including the Canton Youth Organization. As local Pharmacist Ed Lewis Jr. explains in his history book "Reflections of Canton". It was at that time the local service clubs and youth organizations saw the advantage of establishing a specific area near the lake where the youth of Canton could enjoy outdoor activities.
